Beach Boys
Saw them in Brighton on Wednesday. Only David Marks, Bruce Johnston and Mike love can really lay a claim to bring actual Beach Boys but great night and they played for just under three hours. Don't know how they manage it to be honest at their age! They are playing about 60 dates. Was probably the last chance to see one of the great bands but looking forward to Brian Wilson more at O2 in September. Absolute living legend.

When I Grow Up To Be A Man now goes on for 10 minutes until they get up to 75.

Great band. Pet Sounds still one of best albums ever.

Re: Beach Boys
Pet Sounds is fantastic. The 2011 Smile Sessions shows what could have been if Brian Wilson had his shit together. If it had been released before Sargeant Peppers as intended it would have been a game changer. The Brian Wilson biopic with John Cusack, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti looks great.

Re: Beach Boys
I got to see them a couple of years back with Brian Wilson! Bloody excellent show and Wilson's voice is still ok (no way near what it was though).

Pet Sounds is an incredible album. So far ahead of its time.

Re: Beach Boys
Wish I had seen that tour. Amazes me how many of my so called musician friends are not aware of Pet Sounds and Smile and just dismiss them as a surf band. They really are so much more than that.

Re: Beach Boys
So I went to see Brian Wilson at the southbank a few years ago and was on guest list but only expected free entry. Arrived and got given a sticker which usually just means entry to a bar or what knot but we were so buzzing, we just took our seats to watch.

This was one of his first appearances after coming out of his shell so parts of the gig, he seemed to lose focus but all in all to watch and hear pet sounds from him was fucking amazing.

anyways, afterwards as security were clearing out, they came up to me and my guest and said, oh u can go backstage. so off we went for that much needed beer, walked in to this little bar behind the stage and there was maybe 6 people in there, one of whom was a guy called Phil who owned a company that sponsored the pre season cup game at upton park - cant recall its name. then Brian got wheeled in to say hello - fuck knows who they thought we were and fuck knows who he thought anyone was but got a photo and quick chat. made my fucking life meetin him it did.

Re: Beach Boys
Brian was never really that much of a singer, Carl was the voice.

Mike Love = utter cunt.

Re: Beach Boys
Brian was not much of a singer but the absolute genius behind the band, there is no doubting that.

Of course.

He does look slightly like he has had a lobotomy nowadays.

Must have been the smack and milkshakes.

On a related note, I picked up Dennis Wilson's only solo album Pacific Ocean Blue on vinyl recently, absolutely superb, a shame about his sad demise.

Hairy I was lucky enough to meet him too. He was sitting behind me at a Beatles Tribute show so summoned up the courage to go and chat to him in the break. No idea what I said as was so nervous but he was very gracious and shook my hand. My girlfriend was pissed off as I never let her go and talk to anyone famous as I think it's a bit unfair on the person but all those rules went out the window for Brian Wilson!

C Wing it's apparently due to the anti psychotic drugs his psychiatrist prescribed him for years. Heartbreaking story which the new film centres on.

DR WHO - i had no idea there was a new film?

Re: Beach Boys
Yes Google "Love and Mercy" stars Paul Dano as young Brian and John Cusack as older Brian. Follows his breakdown through Smile and his relationship with Eugene Landy his psychiatrist who completely took over his life and ended up getting struck off. He had an incredibly sad but fascinating life. Trailer here

The only bad thing about Pet sounds is it doesn't have Good Vibrations on it.

It was intended for Smile I think.

Seeing Brian Wilson is like watching Michelangelo paint the Cistene Chapel. As a man he's rather odd but the music is sublime.

It was for 'Smile' and you can hear it as intended on the 'Smile sessions' boxed album.

Saw them in Crystal Palace park in 1972, it pissed down. Again in Wembley Stadium 1975. Great live band.
